Are you a freelancer or occasionally doing a freelance job? If yes, then you must know how it can be challenging to get paid for your services. [responsivevoice_button] And if that isn’t enough, the freelance life can also be pretty isolating at times as well. It’s no wonder then that many freelancers have started opting for job boards and freelance marketplaces where they can find projects that are right for them instead of limiting themselves to jobs that are available on their own doorstep. In this article, we will look at some strategies that can help you make sure you get paid after a freelance job. Set Up An Effective Payment Schedule Before you even think about sending out any invoices, you must first establish a payment schedule with your clients. Although the ideal way to work is on an hourly basis, many clients are open to receiving invoices once a project has been completed. Make sure you understand the client’s expectations of your work, as well as your own expectations of the work. This way, you can plan a payment schedule that works for both of you. While a common practice in many professions, freelancers often fail to set up an effective payment schedule when working as a freelancer. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few things you can do to get out of it. Make sure you know the basics of freelancing payment. An invoice is the paperwork you send out to a client after they’ve completed a project. It outlines the terms of the project and how much you’ll be getting paid. Create an effective payment plan. While it may be tempting to stick to a set schedule, you may want to consider making changes based on your needs. If something comes up, you don’t want to be left short-change. Make sure you understand how to set a rate. You can’t set a rate that doesn’t make sense. You can’t make sense out of a rate that doesn’t make sense. Make sure you keep track of your time. Many freelancers fail to do this. Know how long each project should take, whether it be hours or days, then make sure you use that time as if it were yours. Communicate Clearly And Often No matter what type of work you do as a freelancer, you need to make sure you communicate clearly with your clients. You don’t know the person you’re working with, so make sure they know you and what they can expect from you. This is especially important if the client is an individual or if the project is a one-off. If the project is ongoing, you should make regular check-ins to ensure the client is happy with the work you’re doing. Always be open to making changes as well, especially if the project is taking more time than you initially thought it would. If you show flexibility, the client is more likely to be flexible as well. When communicating with your clients, make sure you use clear and concise language. You don’t want to send your client multiple emails because you sent one to one that wasn’t clear or concise enough. It is best if you can communicate with clients through email, but you can also use tools like Slack or Google Meets for team communication if necessary. Show Your Freelance Job Skills And Expertise As a freelancer, you may feel like you have to show clients your entire portfolio of work. While this is a good idea if you’re a full-time freelancer with a brand new business to build a portfolio, using it as a freelancer in search of a single project can be a bit of a waste of time. While it is important that you show off your skills to potential clients, you should also show them what you can do for their specific project. Show them how you can use your skills to help them achieve their goals. This is a win-win situation for both of you as you show off your skills while still getting the work. If you can, try to pair up with other freelancers with skills that complement yours. For example, if you’re a writer, you can pair up with other freelancers who are great at design and development. This way, you can show off your skills, and the other freelancers get a project to work on as well. Find Out If The Job Is Right For You Before You Bid On It Most clients will state in their job descriptions what they want done. But even if they don’t, you need to know what the job is about before you decide to bid on it and accept it as a project. You can do this by reading the job description or posting on forums related to freelance jobs. There are also many other ways to find out what a project is about. There are clients who will be willing to share project details with you, so make sure to ask them. There are also many freelancing marketplaces where you can find out about projects and clients, like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer. Don’t Be Afraid To Negotiate Your Freelance Job While many freelancers state that they don’t negotiate with clients, doing so can actually be beneficial for both you and your client. You may find that there are certain projects that you would happily take, but a client simply doesn’t want to pay you what you’re worth. Negotiating a payment schedule, rates, and project details can help you get more work and make more money as a freelancer. It can also help you get clients who are more willing to work with you because they see that you’re willing to negotiate. What is the Best Way to Get Paid As a Freelancer? Freelance work offers you great flexibility and the opportunity to work with clients all over the world. However, there are several considerations when it comes to payment. You should know how to use different payment methods to ensure that your clients pay you on time. There are several different money transfer providers that you can use to transfer your payments. However, this method has a number of drawbacks. For one, sending cash is inconvenient, especially since most freelancers work with people they've never met. Secondly, cash payments are also very slow, so freelancers should avoid using this method unless it is absolutely necessary. Thankfully, there are a few ways to avoid these drawbacks. The best method of receiving cash payments as a freelancer is by using a service that offers escrow. This option allows clients to deposit money in a safe place and then collect the funds once both parties are satisfied with the work. This method is available around the world, though not in all countries. You can also use Western Union, which offers online payment and on-site payouts at over 500,000 locations worldwide. MoneyGram is another convenient payment method that offers worldwide acceptance and over 350,000 agents in the world. Get Paid Via Checks For Your Freelance Job When accepting freelance work, it is important to understand your client's payment preference. There are many ways to receive payment as a freelancer, including through check. Believe it or not, paper checks are still a way to pay for goods and services (especially in the US), although they are not longer the most traditional method. Additionally they have some drawbacks. For one thing, they take longer to clear and require postage and envelopes. Also, many freelancers dislike receiving checks because of the risk of lost or bounced checks. Fortunately, there are several online payment systems that eliminate these problems. Most freelancers choose PayPal for their payment needs, which is both safer and faster than sending checks. When working with clients, it is important to ensure you get paid quickly and securely. While checks are easy to accept and secure, they can take some time to clear in a bank account. For that reason, it is usually better to request payment up front. Also, it is important to make sure that you know how much bank fees will apply before accepting a check. Get Paid Via Wire Transfers For Your Freelance Job One of the biggest problems freelancers face is getting paid on time and securely. According to a study conducted by business software provider Bonzai, 29% of freelancer invoices were paid at least a day late. By making payments digital, freelancers can increase their chances of receiving payment on time. Many payment services also offer automated follow-up notifications. The fastest way to get paid as a freelancer is to get paid electronically. This method works by moving funds directly from one bank account to another. Depending on your bank, you can receive payment within two business days. However, this method is not recommended for small projects since the fees charged are very high. Also, wire transfers are irreversible, so you cannot get your money back if you make a mistake. Get Paid Via Escrow For Your Freelance Job Escrow is a safe way to receive payments when working as a freelancer. The client deposits money into an account with an escrow provider before the freelancer begins the project. The escrow provider holds the money until the project is complete and the client approves it. Once the project is complete, the escrow service releases the funds to the freelancer. Escrow also protects the interests of both the freelancer and the client. The problem with escrow is that it can be time-consuming and resource-intensive to set up. Get Paid Via PayPal For Your Freelance Job If you're looking for a way to get paid as a freelancer, PayPal is for many, the way to go. It's free and easy to set up. Once you've set up an account, clients can send money directly to your PayPal account or to a linked bank account or debit card. PayPal makes it easy to send and receive money, and it's widely used. PayPal is the world's most popular payment service, and it's available worldwide. It's convenient for international payments, and it also offers multiple security features. Most transactions are completed instantly with PayPal. The company also protects your funds with Seller Protection, which helps ensure that you don't get ripped off. Wise (previously known as TransferWise) Let's talk about Wise and how it functions to get right to the point. With Wise, you can send money to more than 50 countries or receive money online, from your debit or credit card or from your Wise account, in more than 40 different currencies. When converting money, Wise guarantees to use the mid-market exchange rate and adds a small commission that is instantly visible (depending on the currencies involved). Sending money is super easy, here's how Wise works: Provide the recipient's bank information, the amount you want them to receive, and any other necessary information about them (like their address) (IBAN). The recipient's email address will suffice if you lack them. If the recipient is also a Wise user, the process is completed (Wise will find the account where he will receive the money). If the recipient is NOT a Wise user, Wise will send him an email to seek his bank details. At this point you will have to choose the type of transfer and how you want to pay (for a freelancer this is the client side). This can be done in numerous ways, some faster, some cheaper. Debit Card: Faster and cheaper than credit card as credit cards are more expensive to process for Wise. Credit Card: Wise accepts Visa, MasterCard and some Maestro cards. Bank Transfer: Usually the cheapest option to pay for your money transfer with Wise. Sofort: it is easy to use, as payment can be made directly from the Wise app. Trustly: is an online bank payment method with which you can send money to Wise without leaving the site or app. With Wise, you are only permitted to send a certain amount, depending on the payment method you use and the currency route your transfer takes (both to and from the destination). Wise will automatically inform the sender what the fees are for each option and how long it will take for the money to arrive. Once the transfer has taken place, Wise will inform the sender and the recipient via email and / or app. Conclusion Freelancing can be a rewarding and lucrative way to make money.
