In this digital age, a lot of people are working remotely and freelancing to make money. According to a Statista publication of 2020, there are over 59 million freelancers in the US only and that number is only going up. This is in part due to the rise of online job marketplaces like Upwork and LinkedIn as well as sites like Etsy for selling your crafts and services directly to consumers. Working as a freelancer has several benefits as compared to working in an office or somewhere else. It gives you the flexibility to work from home, set your own schedule, pick your own clients and work on projects that interest you. The downside however is that it can be much harder to find remote work than it is if you’re looking for an office job. Thankfully, there are many ways that you can make money by freelancing. Here are some of the best ways: Learn A Skill That Is In Demand It’s always a good idea to start learning a skill that is in demand. That way, you’ll be prepared to find remote work as soon as you need it. There are several skills that are always in demand, like programming, web design, writing and data analysis. If you want to make some serious money, you’ll want to pick a skill that is in high demand and has a good rate. You can check online to find out what skills are in demand in your area. If you have little or no experience in these fields, you can prepare by taking online courses to get you started. That way, when you’re ready to start freelancing, you’ll be able to find clients pretty easily thanks to the skills you’ve learned. Freelancing While You Build A Portfolio Another good way to start freelancing is to work on building your portfolio while you’re building up a client base. You can do this by finding a way to get free or cheap work, or by doing some pro-bono work. Once you have a few portfolio pieces, you can start pitching for real jobs. This way, you can start building a client base and finding out what needs to be worked on without having to worry about finding work. You can also use this time to try out different freelance platforms and see which one works best for you. This will make it much easier to start bringing in consistent work once you’ve finished building your portfolio. Become An Expert By Teaching What You Know If you have expertise in a certain area, you can turn that into a source of income by teaching what you know. There are tons of ways to do this, but some of the best include: - Teaching online on platforms like Udemy or Skillshare - Teaching a class at a local university or college - Hosting a seminar or webinar - Creating a blog where you teach your skills The great thing about this is that it can be done while you’re working remotely and earning a full-time income. It can also be a good way to build up your reputation in your field and make connections that can lead to future clients. Write And Publish An eBook Another good way to start making money as a freelancer is to write and publish an eBook. Note that this is a great option if you have expertise in a certain area, and you’re more interested in building an audience than you are in making money. There are tons of ways to publish an eBook, including using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform. Once your eBook is published, you can use social media and other platforms to promote it, which can lead to several sales. This is a great way to make money as a freelancer, but it’s also a great way to gain exposure for your name and your brand. Create A Video Course Another way to make money as a freelancer is to create a video course. This can be anything from a how-to guide to a skill or topic that you’re an expert in. You can then sell your course on platforms like Udemy or Skillshare. This can be a great way to make money as a freelancer because it allows you to create something once and then sell it multiple times. However, it does take time to create the course, so you’ll want to be prepared to put in the work before you start making money from it. Network And Find Hidden Contracts Finally, you can make money as a freelancer by networking with other freelancers, entrepreneurs and people in your industry. You can find work through online freelancer groups and forums, where people post work they need done. You can also try connecting with people through social media and sending them messages about what you can do for them. There are also websites that act as a platform for clients and freelancers to connect (see fiver for instance), which can make it even easier to find hidden contracts. This is a great way to make money as a freelancer, but it does take time to find consistent work. Conclusion Today’s job market is very different from what it was just a few years ago.
