Consumer read reviews influencing purchasing decisions Among the various factors that influence purchasing decisions, consumer reviews are a vital component. Consumer reviews help customers evaluate the quality of products according to objective criteria. They are also a useful source of social proof that can convince consumers that a product is worth purchasing. There are two main types of consumer reviews online: literal and figurative. A literal review is a direct product description, while a figurative review describes subjective feelings and opinions of parties involved. The latter type is more persuasive than the former. A recent consumer survey revealed that consumers rate average ratings as the most important information a product can offer. The volume of reviews is another important determinant of the value of a review. However, a single review may influence consumers' decision to purchase a higher-rated product. Various studies have explored the effectiveness of different types of consumer reviews, and the relative importance of these types of reviews is a topic of considerable debate. However, the most effective types of reviews are not necessarily the most popular. This is because consumers have different opinions about how useful the various types of reviews are. A study conducted in China examined the effects of both types of reviews. The researchers found that consumers are more likely to purchase a product if it comes with a figurative review than a literal review. This is because the figurative review conveys valuable information about a product in a format that satisfies the needs of consumers. The study also found that the effects of a figurative review were more pronounced in younger adults. Another study explored the impact of online reviews on purchase decisions. The authors found that a figurative review increased the likelihood that a consumer would purchase a search product. However, a literal review increased the likelihood that a consumer would purchase a product that was not searchable. A future study should extend its findings to other types of consumer reviews, including negative reviews. Research-based insights into how reviews influence purchasing decisions can help businesses understand what their customers are looking for and how to deliver it. Beware of businesses that use fake, deceptive, or manipulated reviews Using fake reviews to push clients onto making a purchase can be a very bad idea. They can mislead customers and hurt honest businesses that have unknowingly refereed to them . These reviews never last long, in the long run they can negatively affect the overall reputation and even cause revenue loss up to the business closure. Depending on the review platform, businesses need to provide an adequate basis for determining that a review is false or misleading. Some review platforms require proof of purchase. They also need to disclose the total number of reviews a star rating is based on. In addition, businesses should not ignore the negative reviews of their competitors. These reviews can denigrate the reputation of their competitors and usurp sales from their own business. These reviews are often edited by someone else. It is a form of covert advertising, and it can be sophisticated. The FTC has brought many cases of fake reviews. They have been involved in cases for Facebook, eBay, Amazon and Instagram. These platforms have committed to dealing with fake reviews. Some countries, such as the United States, have adopted regulations that allow businesses to respond to false or misleading reviews. However, the United States have a more difficult time prosecuting fake online reviews than the European Union. It is important for businesses to be aware of their legal obligations. In addition, fake reviews can also affect the reputation of the company that publishes them. Many businesses have been known to hide unhappy customers from leaving negative reviews. Other businesses have also been known to use fake accounts to post negative reviews of local competition. These businesses have been accused of misleading consumers by creating a fake review to deceive them into buying a product. The issue of fake reviews is a growing concern. In the EU, some countries have already taken action against fake reviews. Those countries have stronger regulatory bodies, including the United Kingdom, France, and Italy. However, Spain has no national advertising regulator. Although the EU has some laws in place to protect consumers from misleading advertising, the issue of fake reviews is a complex one. A strong administrative body is needed to fight this issue. In addition, businesses should be prepared to respond to reviews and correct any public record.
