Defining Google Accelerated Mobile Pages

Google AMP

Accelerated Mobile Pages

AMP (Accelerated Mobile Page) is a project launched by Google to promote the loading speed of mobile pages.

A project oriented in particular to news sites and blogs, since – for example – in E-commerce the user experience (with purchases, shopping cart, related products, discount code banners …) requires implementations that are difficult to circumvent with the code of AMP.

The speed of response and loading of information pages (news and blogs) is the basis for the development of this project. David Besbris, director of engineers at Google, said during the presentation conference that “Whenever an article takes too long to reach a reader, that reader is lost”.

How does AMP work?

In AMP, the pages are deprived of all the unnecessary whistles and bells that web designers and customers add to it because, of course, they like it, therefore focus on the main photo and text, giving the possibility to be inserted in the Google cache (smart caching) to be served in speed to those who make a certain research. This, combined with the structured data, also allows Google to present the news on the SERP as information that does not require another click (a bit ‘as already happens with the weather forecast, the times of cinema shows, information on football matches, recipes …).

So it’s not like “choose to browse” between the AMP pages. Simply do a search on Google with your smartphone and when you select a result, if this is in line with the Google standard, it is served in AMP version.

The source code of the AMP project is constantly evolving, but it is also available on GitHub: which makes it in effect open source and unpresentable / usable by anyone for any project.

AMP deprives the user experience of all javascript that underlies animations, effects, meta-text / video / content functions, returning a clean, essential and no-frills page.
The result is that pages use up to 10 times less data and load 4 times faster.
It’s a web that is not irritating and that presents all the same pages (roughly, you can actually draw the pages with colors, sizes, logo …)

So, no, you do not need the institutional pages of your company site.
No need to improve the user experience of your E-commerce (here you have to think about a mobile user experience with counterfocuses to increase your conversions, AMP does not help you).

If you are curious to see an AMP page, you can do it, in most of the sites where it is activated, by adding the extension / amp / to your address you should see the page in Accelerate Mobile Pages.
