Finding a good sound studio

In this article I will try to answer the question “I want to find a good sound studio. But how do I do it?”

I recently had to have some audio background for a professional video I am working on behalf of a client and had to literally look everywhere to find a good sound studio. After a long and tedious back and forth with some “Audio Engineers” in Up-works and other equivalent websites I decided to rise the bar a few notches and finally after a good tip from a colleague I contacted the guys at AMAZING MASTERING. I was so impressed by the demos I had listened too that I decided the search was over.

To make a little order, let’s start by saying that finding the right studio to produce your music can definitely be a daunting job as nowadays there is so many so called “Sound engineer”, or “Audio technician” that after a couple of years of study a bit of software and a variety of algorithms (and the help of mom and pop) open up a studio pronto…they are on business. This is because there is no strict nomenclature that clearly identifies these figures. However, What makes stand out from the rest of the bunch is not the computer skills and the amount of modulation or algorithm but, the “knowledge”, and the “experience”. Now imagine someone that first listen too your music (in a properly tuned room), and then start tweaking and twisting knobs to sublimate and make every note sound at best.

Amazing Mastering are the guys experienced in more than just one context. Recording studios, postproduction, live, broadcasting.. you name it…they handle it!

Here is how it works

Mastering a track or several of them consists in the writing of the instrumental parts and in the adaptation of the vocal melody and text. It is probably the most creative part of a music production and requires great interaction between the musicians, the producer and the composer. For the realization of a song Amazing Mastering use real instruments and musicians. No self-arranging software!

What do you need to arrange your song:

  • Text
  • Music Sheet. They can be written for the piano or for the guitar.
  • Vocal melody

What if I need editing?

Well first of all I should probably explain what is intended for “editing”.

Editing is the “arrangement” and “organization” part of the recorded material. In addition to the classic waveform editing operations, editing also includes:

  • Time correction: timing of the tracks, choice of the takes made, replacements.
  • Pitch correction: verification and correction of intonation with the use of software such as Melodyne and Autotune.
  • Drum replacement & triggering: replacement of real drum parts with samples from the best libraries on the market.
  • Reamping: in the case of basses or guitars that have been recorded online, it is possible to redirect the sound to a real amplifier and resume the sound with a microphone so as to have a realism and a rendering that the only line signal, or a plugin, could never give.

For those who need Mixing

Mixing is the phase in which the sound of the song is created and modeled. Formed by a series of processes such as EQ, comp, automation and study of the environments, the mix is a fundamental part of the production and serves to give identity and character to the track.

The mix can be of two types:

  1. Stereo Mix (all tracks of the song separated)
  2. Stem Mix (the tracks of the song collected in groups of instruments)

Finally the Mastering Services

Mastering consists in finalizing the mix. It is carried out through EQ, comp and limiting operations and is vital for different situations: Emphasizing a mix and possibly correcting some aspects. Make the tracks of a disc uniform between them so as not to hear obvious differences between one song and another.
