Colony Coworking Space KLCC: a workspace that feels very different from the usual office

Colony Coworking Space KLCC

There are plenty of places in Kuala Lumpur where you can open a laptop and get some work done. Finding somewhere that you would genuinely be happy to walk into every morning is a different matter.

That is where Colony Coworking Space at KLCC becomes interesting.

Located at Vipod Residences on Jalan Kia Peng, Colony sits right between two of Kuala Lumpur’s best-known commercial areas: KLCC and Pavilion. The official Colony website describes the location as a 19,000 sq ft, two-storey, high-ceiling workspace, and that sense of scale matters. This isn’t a converted shoplot with a few desks squeezed into the available space. It has been designed from the beginning to feel like a proper workplace, just one without the formality and commitment of a conventional office lease.

What immediately stands out to me about Colony is that it doesn’t really look like the coworking spaces people tend to imagine.

If your mental picture of Coworking is long communal tables, brightly coloured chairs and a room full of people wearing headphones, Colony KLCC is likely to challenge that idea fairly quickly. There are shared areas, naturally, but the overall atmosphere feels closer to an upmarket members’ lounge or boutique hotel.

And that changes the experience more than you might expect.

A very good address to start with

Colony @ KLCC is located at Vipod Residences, 6 Jalan Kia Peng, 50450 Kuala Lumpur. This places the workspace within the heart of the KLCC business district.

For someone unfamiliar with Kuala Lumpur, the important point is simply that this is a genuinely central location.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is nearby, while the KLCC area is in the other direction. One organisation based at Colony describes Pavilion as roughly a five-minute walk from the workspace.

That positioning is particularly useful if your working day involves meeting clients.

You can work somewhere comfortable without isolating yourself in a suburban office park, and when someone asks where your office is, “KLCC” needs very little explanation. For consultants, small agencies and international companies in particular, there is real value in having an address that people immediately recognise.

It is one of the things I like most about this particular Colony location. The workspace and its surroundings complement each other. You get a polished working environment inside and one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest commercial districts the moment you step outside.

It doesn’t feel like an office that is trying too hard to be trendy

Coworking design can sometimes go a little overboard. There is a temptation to make everything playful, colourful or aggressively “creative.”

Colony KLCC goes in another direction.

Colony describes the design of its KLCC branch as being inspired by a gentlemen’s club, although the practical result is better understood as a warm, hospitality-led interior rather than a conventional corporate workplace.

Looking at the space, this is probably its strongest distinguishing feature. It feels grown-up.

There is a noticeable sense that someone has thought about what it is like to spend an entire working day here, rather than simply trying to make the reception area photograph well. The high ceilings help. So does having different kinds of spaces available rather than forcing everybody to work in exactly the same environment.

That matters when you actually need to concentrate.

Some days you may be perfectly happy working from an open area. On others you need to make calls, speak privately to a client or spend several hours getting through something without interruptions. Colony provides phone booths, a common lounge, Meeting Spaces, meeting rooms, a pantry and an on-site café, so you can move around according to what you are doing. The KLCC location also lists printers and scanners, nap rooms, a kids’ play area and a lactation room among its facilities.

The result is much closer to a complete office environment than simply renting somewhere to sit.

Starting small with a Hot Desk

This is also where coworking makes much more sense once you stop thinking about it as one specific product.

You don’t necessarily need to rent an office.

If you are a freelancer, consultant, remote worker or somebody who just wants to get out of the house, a Hot Desk is probably the easiest place to start. You use the open coworking area without having a permanently assigned desk waiting for you.

At the time of writing, Colony advertises its open Hot Desk plans from RM430+ per month, while a prepaid option starts at RM370+ for 100 hours. Its general Hot Desk information also advertises a Day pass at RM63+ per day. Prices can of course change, so I would check the current rate before making a decision.

I actually think the Day pass is one of the most useful options for someone considering Colony for the first time.

Photos can tell you what a workspace looks like. They cannot tell you whether you personally enjoy working there.

Trying it for a day gives you a much better answer. You can see what the atmosphere is like during real working hours, test the internet connection with your normal workload, find your favourite part of the common area and get a sense of how busy the space feels.

If that works for you, moving to a monthly plan becomes a much easier decision.

And if you want your own desk, there is a middle ground

Not everybody enjoys arriving each morning and choosing a different seat.

Colony has a reserved-desk option for people who like the communal side of coworking but would rather have their own regular workstation. The KLCC page currently lists reserved desks from RM920+ per month.

This is an option I think gets overlooked.

There is a substantial difference between working at a Hot Desk and knowing that a particular desk is yours. You can settle into more of a routine without taking on the cost of an enclosed office.

It can work particularly well for independent professionals who spend most of their day at the same location but don’t require a room of their own.

Private and Shared offices for growing businesses

Move beyond individual desks and Colony begins to make sense for small teams as well.

Its private workspaces range from spaces for an individual to offices suitable for companies of 20 people and more. The KLCC location currently lists private offices from RM2,390+ per month, although Colony states that plans are customised according to the needs of the business.

This is effectively the Dedicated office end of the coworking spectrum.

You have a private environment for your team but remain connected to the facilities and infrastructure of the wider workspace. For a small company, that can remove a surprising amount of hassle.

With a traditional office, getting the keys is only the beginning. You then have to think about furniture, internet access, meeting facilities, utilities, cleaning, common areas and all the other small things that nobody gets particularly excited about managing.

With serviced and Shared offices, much of that infrastructure already exists around you.

For a growing company, there is another advantage: flexibility. A business with three employees today may have six next year. Committing early to a conventional office can mean either paying for empty space now or discovering later that you have outgrown it.

A flexible workspace gives you more room to adapt.

Meeting Spaces that you would actually want clients to see

This is perhaps the part of Colony’s positioning that makes the most sense in KLCC.

Working from home is easy enough until you need to meet somebody.

A coffee shop can work for an informal catch-up, but it becomes a very different proposition when you are presenting a contract, discussing confidential information, running a workshop or meeting an important client for the first time.

Having proper Meeting Spaces changes the equation.

Colony offers several meeting rooms at KLCC. Its current meeting-room information lists Curie and Earhart for up to eight guests, while Columbus accommodates larger groups, with the website listing capacity around 14–16 people. Facilities promoted for Colony’s meeting rooms include high-speed Wi-Fi, wireless projection and built-in audiovisual equipment.

I particularly like the distinction between where you work and where you meet people.

You can spend most of the day at a relatively economical workstation and only use a more formal environment when the situation calls for it. A freelancer can suddenly have a credible meeting room. A three-person startup can host a much larger client presentation. A remote company can bring its team together for a workshop without maintaining a large permanent office.

That’s one of coworking’s more practical benefits, and it has very little to do with free coffee or fashionable furniture.

There is more here than simply renting physical space

Businesses have also changed the way they think about addresses.

You may run a perfectly legitimate company without needing employees sitting inside a traditional office five days a week. What you might still want, however, is a professional business presence in Kuala Lumpur.

That is where Virtual offices come into the picture.

Colony offers virtual-office services alongside its physical workspace products. For entrepreneurs and businesses considering this route, the important thing is to confirm exactly which services and address options are currently available at KLCC, particularly if the address will be used for company registration or official correspondence.

It creates an interesting progression.

You could potentially begin by needing only a business presence, use a Day pass when you want somewhere to work, book a meeting room when clients are in town, move to a Hot Desk as your routine changes, and eventually take a private office when you build a team.

You don’t have to know today what your business will need two years from now.

The small facilities make a bigger difference after a few hours

Workspace marketing tends to focus on the big things: location, price, desks and meeting rooms.

The smaller details are often what determine whether somewhere is pleasant to use every day.

At Colony KLCC, having private phone booths means a video call doesn’t necessarily become a performance for everyone sitting nearby. A pantry gives you somewhere to step away from your desk. The common lounge creates an alternative to staying planted in the same chair for eight hours.

Even the more unusual facilities tell you something about how broadly Colony has thought about the people using the space. A kids’ play area and lactation room, for example, recognise that the people running companies, freelancing or working remotely also have lives and responsibilities outside work.

That is a small detail, but a rather human one.

Who does Colony KLCC make the most sense for?

I wouldn’t choose Colony simply because it is a coworking space. There are cheaper ways to put a laptop on a desk.

I would choose it when the environment around that desk matters too.

It makes particular sense for an independent professional who meets clients, a small business that wants an office in central Kuala Lumpur without fitting one out from scratch, or a remote company that occasionally needs somewhere professional for employees to gather.

It is also appealing if you simply work better in an environment that feels polished and established.

Some coworking spaces sell energy. Others sell convenience. Colony KLCC seems to sit somewhere between workspace and hospitality, and I think that is the key to understanding it.

You’re not just paying for the square metre occupied by your chair. You’re paying for the ability to work, meet, take a private call, welcome a visitor and present your business from one central location.

For the right person, that distinction is worth quite a lot.

A workspace worth seeing before you decide

My overall impression of Colony KLCC is positive precisely because it doesn’t rely on a single gimmick.

The location is strong. The 19,000 sq ft footprint provides enough room for different working environments. There are realistic entry points for individual workers as well as private office options for established teams. And the meeting facilities make the space useful beyond an ordinary working day.

Most of all, it feels like somewhere designed with the assumption that professionals might actually spend a considerable amount of time there.

If you’re considering a coworking space around KLCC, I wouldn’t try to make the entire decision from photographs or a price table. Book a viewing or try a Day pass. Sit down, open your laptop and spend some time there.

With workspaces, that is usually when you know.
