Fishbone Diagram for Presentation

An effective visual tool to elaborate causes and effects.

The fishbone diagrams – named so because the full diagram resembles the skeleton of a fish – were developed by Kaoru Ishikawa to illustrate and help determine how various factors can correlate and cause potential problems. Fishbone diagrams are also known as cause-effect diagrams, root cause diagrams, or Ishikawa diagrams.

The head of the fish is the observed or potential negative effect and every “fish bone” is one of the causes that could have led to this effect. In more complex diagrams the bones can potentially branch off into smaller bones to indicate a sort of chain of reaction of the root causes that lead to generate other causes.

Typically, the macro causes (the 6 main lids) are categorized with the so-called 6M technique:

  • Men / people; causes due to human error.
  • Machines; causes attributable to a process machinery.
  • Methods; causes attributable to the procedures used.
  • Materials; causes attributable to the raw materials used.
  • Measurement; causes attributable to the measurement systems used.
  • Mother nature; phenomena beyond our control. Act of God.

The fishbone diagrams with the observed negative effect and with the 6M is used in a brainstorming where the participants are asked to hypothesize as many causes as possible and to report them on the diagram.

Once the diagram is complete, it is possible to analyze all the possible causes (alone or in combination) of the effects (or of the problem) in order to develop a solution to mitigate it. The Ishikawa diagram allows to organize the thought and encourages an ordered consideration of the factors that could have led to a certain type of result.
