VeraCrypt: How to encrypt a file for Linux
Data security is a necessity and not a luxury. Every now and then, we go through sensitive data which demands security and encryption. Nobody will have access to your personal data unless you want them to.
VeraCrypt can encrypt single files or the whole hard drive
You can encrypt individual files as well as a whole drive. This way the unauthorized parties will be restrained from accessing your sensitive data. It is a way to protect the privacy of your files and folders. You can encrypt your files, drives, and different data through many software applications.
One similar software is VeraCrypt. VeraCrypt is a tool, through which you can encrypt your files and disks. Through this utility, you can save your data from everyone who does not have the password or passphrase for access. This way, even if your hard drives get stolen or lost, your data will be well-protected. Your important files can be backed-up this way. It is free software and works for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Creating protected volumes with VeraCrypt
VeraCrypt will create a protected area in your device called volume. This whole area lies beneath a single file called a container. It uses on-the-fly encryption for securing your files. This encryption encrypts and decrypts data transparently when it is being written or read respectively. Now the real question is how do you use Veracrypt to encrypt your files.
VeraCrypt allows you to create hidden or standard volumes (protected area). The standard area can be accessed with a single password. The hidden one requires two passphrases, one for less-sensitive files and the other for highly confidential and private data. To encrypt a file as standard volume, you must follow the following steps.
- Launch VeraCrypt on your device.
- Open the main application window of VeraCrypt.
- Select the create volume option to activate VeraCrypt and to make a container for your sensitive file.
- Select the type of volume you want to create, standard or hidden.
- After choosing standard, choose a name and location for your VeraCrypt container file.
- Click on Select file for locating and naming the container.
- Navigate to the location for saving the file.
- Click Next to set the Encrypting options.
- Select the file size in the next option.
- Set a Passphrase for the volume.
- Select an appropriate file system and go to the next option.
- Click on Format to begin.
- When the volume has been created, click on OK.
In Linux, your file has been created by following the above steps carefully. You can check the created volume on the stored location now. Your device’s sensitive files, folders, and data are now secured with this handy tool. Privacy and security is an important aspect of our data creation. With this compatible utility called VeraCrypt, taking care of your data has become easier.
Your sensitive files are now enclosed and protected with passwords to make it less accessible to the outer people. It is a reliable tool for data protection.
