Before we talk of SSD Drives, (picture on the top left), let’s just review what we know of mechanical hard drives, (picture on the bottom right), which are still the most common used storage on commercial PC.

Mechanical Hard drives are made of metal spinning platters with a magnetic coat that stores and retrieves data written to it via an harm with an head at the end, (looking like the one in the old turntables). Hard Drives are “nonvolatile” memory, so the data stays stored on the disk even when the system is powered off.

Mechanical drives have always been the norm until recent years when the newest SSD, (solid state drives / disks), came out.

The new SSD store and retrieve data and serve the same purpose, however, they are not made from moving parts, they require less power, they do not heat up and the data is accessed 10 time faster than a mechanical hard drive.

SSD are made from interconnected flash memory chips that resembles the same memory chips of the common USB flash drives that we all use today. Although the technology behind SSD is very similar to the Flash memory on USB drives, SSD are faster and more reliable.

The most commonly used SSD Drives have the same size of a 2.5” laptop hard drive, can come with either sata, msata, (mobile sata), pci express and even other type of connector, sata is the connector which is compatible with the majority of PC and laptops in use today.
